Surge in Measles Cases Alarms Health Officials Across Canada

The number of measles cases in Quebec has escalated, with 36 confirmed incidents, predominantly in the Laurentians region. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) had forewarned of such an increase, especially during the March break travel season. Despite Ontario being the most affected province, Quebec's numbers are rising rapidly, with the Eastern Townships recently added to the list of impacted areas. In this region alone, there were 119 confirmed and 23 probable cases as of February 26.

The situation in Quebec mirrors a larger trend across Canada where measles cases for the first two months of 2025 have already surpassed those recorded for all of 2024. New Brunswick, British Columbia, and Manitoba also report a few cases, contributing to the nationwide concern. The outbreak extends beyond Canadian borders, with the United States experiencing significant outbreaks, particularly in Texas and New Mexico, where over 250 cases have been documented.

In response to the growing threat, health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination. In Quebec, children are typically vaccinated at 12 and 18 months according to the provincial schedule, yet the vaccine remains available free of charge at any age. The PHAC urges individuals to ensure their vaccinations are up to date to help control the spread of the disease.

The measles virus is highly contagious but not immediately so. A person exposed to measles is not contagious for the first four days following exposure. However, if an unvaccinated person comes into contact with a measles case, they are required to self-isolate from day five to day 14 post-exposure to prevent further transmission.
