"It’s important to note that Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims who are active in the fight for Palestinian rights are canaries in the coal mine," Aziz remarked. "Americans should view how they are treated as an indicator of what’s in store for anyone who has views that dissent from the government."
The arrest marks an escalation in efforts to suppress dissent against US and Israeli policies, spurring debates over civil liberties and freedom of speech.
"This arrest is an escalation, but it’s certainly not new," observed Yousef Munayyer.
