Peterborough City Council announces the return of its popular Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, providing free activities and meals for children during the Easter holidays. The initiative targets primary and secondary school pupils, as well as children with special educational needs and disabilities (Send). Funded by the Department for Education, the programme will run from April 7 to April 21 at 50 venues across the city. Eligible children can participate in four-hour sessions filled with sports and creative activities.
Parents with children eligible for free school meals can book session slots starting Monday. The programme is designed to support these families by offering healthy food and engaging activities, ensuring that children remain active and nourished during the school break. Councillor Katy Cole, the cabinet member for children's services, expressed her enthusiasm for the programme's return.
"I'm delighted that we are once again offering these sessions which have previously proved very popular." – Councillor Katy Cole, cabinet member for children's services.
The HAF programme provides a broad range of activities tailored to different age groups, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to participate in something they enjoy. The inclusion of both sports and creative sessions allows children to explore various interests while developing new skills. This comprehensive approach not only keeps children entertained but also promotes physical health and creativity.
The initiative's popularity in previous years highlights its success in meeting the needs of families across Peterborough. By offering these sessions at numerous city venues, the programme ensures accessibility for all eligible children. The commitment to supporting children with special educational needs further underscores the programme's inclusive approach.
The collaboration between Peterborough City Council and the Department for Education exemplifies a dedicated effort to address food insecurity and provide enriching experiences for young people. By alleviating some of the financial burdens faced by families, the HAF programme plays a crucial role in supporting the community's well-being.
