Record-Breaking Year for U.S. National Parks: 2024’s Most Visited Sites

In an unprecedented achievement, the National Park Service (NPS) set a new record for annual recreation visits in 2024, with nearly 331.9 million people exploring its diverse array of sites. This marked a significant increase of 6.36 million visits, or 2%, from the previous year. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area emerged as the most-visited site, attracting 17.18 million visitors to its expansive stretch from southern San Mateo County to northern Marin County.

The NPS, which oversees 433 units comprising national parks, parkways, battlefields, national seashores, memorials, and historic sites, witnessed remarkable visitor engagement across its sites. Among these, national parks accounted for just 28% of all visits in 2024. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area surpassed the Blue Ridge Parkway, which had traditionally held the top spot in previous years.

The Lincoln Memorial also maintained its status as the most-visited NPS site that does not span a large area. This iconic monument continues to draw millions of visitors each year, reflecting its historical and cultural significance. Other top sites included the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which led among headliner national parks in visitor numbers.

Zion National Park in Utah and Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona remained in a close competition for the second and third spots among national parks. These renowned natural wonders continue to captivate tourists with their breathtaking landscapes and outdoor activities.

The top ten most-visited NPS sites for the year included well-known locations such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, Gateway National Recreation Area, Gulf Islands National Seashore, Natchez Trace Parkway, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Each of these sites offers unique attractions and experiences, contributing to their popularity among visitors.

Notably, the NPS achieved this milestone by expanding its offerings. In 2024, four new sites were introduced, further enhancing the diversity of experiences available to the public. This strategic expansion reflects the NPS's commitment to preserving and promoting the nation's natural and historical treasures.

The previous record for NPS visits was set in 2016 with roughly 330.9 million recreation visits. The new figures from 2024 demonstrate a growing interest in outdoor recreation and historical exploration among Americans and international tourists alike.
