Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have announced Ajinkya Rahane as their captain for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The seasoned cricketer takes over the reins following the release of former captain Shreyas Iyer, who will now lead Punjab Kings. Rahane will be supported by Venkatesh Iyer, a seam-bowling all-rounder, who has been appointed as the deputy captain. The IPL season is set to kick off with KKR hosting Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22.
Venky Mysore, KKR's chief executive, expressed confidence in Rahane's leadership abilities, citing his experience and maturity. Rahane previously captained India to a historic Test series victory in Australia during the 2020-21 season, showcasing his strategic acumen and calm demeanor under pressure.

Rahane's cricketing journey began with his debut for India in a T20 international against England in 2011. His last international appearance was during the 2023 Test tour of the West Indies. Despite stepping away from international cricket, Rahane remains a formidable presence in the IPL with his extensive experience and leadership qualities.
Venkatesh Iyer, known for his prowess as a seam-bowling all-rounder, has been a key figure within the KKR franchise. His leadership abilities have been acknowledged by Mysore, who expressed confidence in the synergy between Rahane and Iyer as they strive to defend their title.

The changes within KKR come amidst a broader reshuffling within the IPL. Delhi Capitals remain the only team yet to appoint a captain following the release of Rishabh Pant, who will now lead Lucknow Super Giants. The release of both Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer from KKR has paved the way for Rahane's appointment as captain.
