Stuart Road Primary Academy in Plymouth has announced the permanent adoption of traffic restrictions during peak hours, following a successful 18-month trial. The initiative, developed in partnership with Plymouth City Council and charity Sustrans, aims to create a safer environment for children and promote healthier commuting options.
The trial demonstrated significant results, with a remarkable 45% reduction in the number of children being driven to the school. The new rules encourage families to walk, scooter, or cycle to school, helping to foster a culture of active transportation among students. To facilitate this, certain roads around the school will be closed during the busy morning and afternoon periods, effectively reducing congestion and improving air quality.
Councillor John Stephens, the council's walking and cycling champion, praised the initiative, stating that it is “a great way to reduce congestion and improve air quality around the school gates.” His comments reflect a growing recognition of the importance of creating pedestrian-friendly environments, especially in areas frequented by children.
Headteacher Britta Nicholls underscored the school's commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles among its students. She expressed her enthusiasm for the scheme, which positions Stuart Road Primary Academy as the first school in the city to permanently implement the Safer School Streets measures. This initiative not only addresses traffic concerns but also encourages daily exercise as part of children's routines.
