Gene Hackman, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in films such as "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven," was discovered dead in his New Mexico home on February 26, 2023. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, was also found deceased in the residence, along with one of their dogs. The circumstances surrounding their deaths have raised numerous questions, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
Initial investigations revealed no apparent signs of foul play or external trauma to either Hackman or Arakawa. Autopsies conducted on both individuals have yet to determine the manner and cause of death. Investigators are currently awaiting full autopsy and toxicology reports, which could take up to three months to complete.
The last recorded event on Hackman’s pacemaker occurred on February 17, nine days prior to the discovery of the bodies. According to Detective Mendoza, "An initial interrogation was conducted of Mr. Hackman's pacemaker." This data suggests that February 17 may have been the last day of life for the actor, leading investigators to further analyze the timeline of events leading up to their deaths.
Mendoza emphasized the challenges faced during the investigation, stating, "One of the challenges is trying to determine that timeline of last contact." To assist in this effort, authorities have obtained cell phones and a 2025 daily planner from the couple's home. They are also in contact with maintenance workers, family members, and security personnel to piece together the final days of Hackman and Arakawa.
At the scene, responders found Arakawa's body in the bathroom alongside scattered pills, a space heater, and one of their dogs. The medications located near her body included Tylenol, a thyroid medication, and diltiazem—an agent commonly prescribed for high blood pressure and chest pain.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains crucial for authorities to establish a clear timeline and ascertain how the couple's lives came to an abrupt end.
