Health Canada has announced a recall of SC Johnson & Son, Inc.'s Kids by Babyganics SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen. The recall affects products in both rollerball and continuous spray formats due to safety concerns regarding the presence of monoglyme. This decision comes as a precautionary measure to safeguard public health.
The concerning ingredient, monoglyme—also known as 1,2-dimethoxyethane—is present in levels exceeding the allowable limit. Monoglyme poses potential health risks as it can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled during use. Notably, exposure to monoglyme may adversely affect fetal development and harm the reproductive system, particularly with frequent use.
The recall covers products with expiry dates of November 2025 and April 2026. It is important to note that the recall is not related to the sunscreen's SPF 50 or mineral sunscreen properties but solely due to the monoglyme content. Health Canada emphasizes that this action is taken to protect consumers from possible health hazards associated with monoglyme exposure.
SC Johnson & Son, Inc. has been informed of the recall and is expected to cooperate in notifying consumers and providing guidance on returning or disposing of the affected products. Health Canada advises individuals who have purchased these products to discontinue use immediately and follow instructions for safe disposal.
