Fakhar Zaman’s Exit Leaves Pakistan Facing Uphill Battle in ICC Champions Trophy

Fakhar Zaman, a pivotal figure in Pakistan's cricket lineup, has been ruled out for the remainder of the ICC Champions Trophy due to a chest muscle injury. The 34-year-old left-handed batsman sustained the injury while fielding against New Zealand in Karachi, leading to his replacement by Imam-ul-Haq in the tournament. This development comes as a significant blow to the defending champions, who must now strategize without one of their most consistent performers. Pakistan faces a challenging path, needing a victory over arch-rivals India to maintain their semifinal aspirations.

Zaman's injury occurred during a crucial match against New Zealand, where he sprained a chest muscle. Due to playing rules, he was unable to open the innings and instead batted at number four, scoring 24 runs off 41 balls. Despite his best efforts, Zaman showed visible signs of discomfort while at the crease. With an impressive record of 86 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and an average exceeding 46, Zaman's absence leaves a significant void in Pakistan's batting order.

The ICC Champions Trophy features Pakistan in Group A alongside Bangladesh and Australia, while England, South Africa, and Afghanistan make up Group B. Only the top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. Already facing a defeat against New Zealand in the tournament opener, Pakistan's quest for glory hinges on overcoming formidable opponents.

Zaman, who has represented Pakistan with distinction on numerous occasions, expressed his sentiments on social media following the announcement of his withdrawal.

“I will be backing our boys in green from home. This is only just the beginning, the comeback will be stronger than the setback.”

In another post, he acknowledged his disappointment but remained hopeful for future opportunities.

“Unfortunately I’m now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner. Grateful for the opportunity.”

Reflecting on his time with the national team, Zaman shared his pride in wearing the Pakistan jersey.

“I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride.”
