King Charles Lauds Invictus Games Pioneer During London Visit

King Charles praised David Henson, a former captain of Team UK at the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014, labeling him "remarkable" during a visit to Imperial College London's Centre for Injury Studies. The King made the remarks while viewing advanced virtual reality biofeedback technology that aids rehabilitation for those who have suffered limb loss. The visit highlighted the ongoing development of technology in partnership with Ukraine's National Rehabilitation Centre, Unbroken, and Imperial College London.

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, is a testament to the enduring spirit of injured and sick servicemen and women. Harry first met Henson at the Warrior Games in the United States, which inspired him to create the international tournament. Henson's leadership as captain of Team UK during the first games in London set the stage for future competitions. He continued to compete in the Invictus Games in 2016 and also participated in the Paralympics the same year. His daughter, Emily, famously charmed audiences in 2017 by playfully taking Prince Harry's popcorn at the Toronto Invictus Games.

During his visit, King Charles expressed gratitude for the UK's steadfast support for Ukraine during a video call with Dr. Hnat Herych, chief of general surgery at Unbroken. The advanced biofeedback technology developed at the Centre for Injury Studies is not only enhancing rehabilitation efforts but also aims to protect soldiers on the battlefield.

David Henson's relationship with the royal family extends beyond his athletic achievements. He served as a trustee of the Invictus Games until the end of 2023 and was an esteemed guest at Prince Harry's wedding in 2018. King Charles acknowledged Henson's contributions, stating:

"You are a great example to us all." – Charles

Henson responded with humility regarding his participation in future games, remarking:

"So I'm a touch too old, I think." – David Henson

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently attended the first winter Invictus Games in Vancouver and Whistler, Canada, further solidifying the enduring legacy of these games. The event continues to bring together injured service members from around the globe, showcasing their resilience and competitive spirit.
