“Head from Hell” Introduces Saturday Detentions: A Bold Move for School Discipline

Alun Ebenezer, the newly appointed head teacher at Caldicot School, has stirred controversy with his rigorous approach to discipline, earning him the nickname "head from hell." Since his appointment in June 2024, Ebenezer has implemented several changes aimed at transforming the school, including the introduction of Saturday detentions. This decision has sparked debate among parents and educators alike.

The Welsh government maintains that schools should serve as safe environments for both learners and staff. Despite this, Ebenezer argues that strict discipline and firm boundaries are essential for young people. He aims to elevate Caldicot School to one of the top 20 in Wales, asserting that high standards in uniform, appearance, punctuality, attendance, behavior, and attitude are crucial for achieving this goal.

"So people saying 'no, not doing it' or walking away [swearing] – zero tolerance"

  • Alun Ebenezer

Ebenezer's appointment follows a tumultuous period marked by teacher strikes over violent and abusive behavior at the school. Although education inspectors Estyn report improvements in behavior since Ebenezer took charge, they stress that significant progress is still required. The school's zero-tolerance policy now extends to defiance and uniform violations, with pupils facing the possibility of being sent home for non-compliance.

Detentions can be issued on the same day or on Saturdays, barring half-term holidays. Parents receive at least 24 hours' written notice for any detentions scheduled outside regular school hours. While Ebenezer's policies aim to instill discipline, about 20-30 parents have voiced objections, and a few families have even withdrawn their children from the school due to concerns over his methods.

"We will be safest, happiest and flourish most when we bring back firm discipline, strict boundaries and we can get on with it"

  • Alun Ebenezer

Despite the criticism, some support Ebenezer's approach. Hayley Moseley, a parent at the school, concurs with his philosophy.

"It's better to be strict than not strict at all"

  • Hayley Moseley

Ebenezer emphasizes that his strictness should not be mistaken for nastiness. Instead, he describes it as a straightforward system where actions have clear consequences.

"Strict is no nonsense – you do this, this happens. No means no, it's not nasty"

  • Alun Ebenezer

While the zero-tolerance policy has faced resistance, Ebenezer remains undeterred. He believes that a strong disciplinary framework will ultimately benefit the students by creating an environment conducive to learning and growth.
