Rubiales Faces Trial Amid Controversy Over World Cup Kiss

Former Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales is standing trial in Madrid's National Court, facing charges of sexual assault. The accusations stem from an incident involving a kiss on the mouth with player Jenni Hermoso during the Women's World Cup awards ceremony in Australia in 2023. Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of two and a half years in prison for Rubiales, who denies all charges of coercion.

Rubiales, 47, insists that the kiss was consensual, claiming that Hermoso gave her permission. He told the court, "I am totally sure that she gave me her permission." Rubiales further described the event as "an act of affection," emphasizing its spontaneity. "In that moment it was something completely spontaneous," he asserted. He recounted how Hermoso allegedly squeezed him tightly, lifted him, and agreed to a kiss when he asked.

"She squeezed me very tightly under my armpits, she lifted me, and when I came down I asked her if I can give you a kiss, and she said 'OK', that's what happened."

However, Hermoso's testimony tells a different story. She conveyed to the court that she felt "disrespected" by the non-consensual kiss. The incident has escalated into a high-profile trial, attracting significant media attention and public scrutiny. Allegations have surfaced that Rubiales attempted to coerce Hermoso into publicly stating that the kiss was consensual. This alleged coercion was reportedly facilitated with the assistance of three other former football federation officials.

The trial not only focuses on the specific incident but also highlights broader issues related to consent and power dynamics in professional sports. As the proceedings continue, the spotlight remains on the testimonies of both Rubiales and Hermoso, which are central to the case.
