Love and Resilience: A Proposal at the Invictus Games

James Cairns made a momentous proposal to his girlfriend, Hannah Wild, during the 2025 Invictus Games, transforming a global event into a personal milestone. In front of a cheering crowd, James presented Hannah with a diamond ring, artfully set with smaller encrusted diamonds on its band. The proposal was carefully planned, with James first seeking approval from Hannah's mother by sending her the ring for consent.

Their two-year-old son, Arthur, was asleep during the proposal but was promptly woken up for photos, where the couple kept him entertained with dinosaur jokes. Despite the joyous event, this proposal is only one chapter in James's compelling story of resilience and recovery.

James joined the British Army in 2008, serving with the Royal Yorks. In 2011, during his deployment to Afghanistan with the Brigade Reconnaissance Forces (BRFs), he was shot by a sniper on October 31, sustaining a severe leg injury. After two years of rehabilitation efforts to save his leg, doctors made the difficult decision to amputate it, commencing a new phase of rehab.

His journey through recovery has been challenging. James struggled with his mental health, a battle that intensified with the loss of seven comrades to suicide due to PTSD over the past year. However, his participation in the Invictus Games provided him with renewed motivation. He acknowledges Hannah's crucial role in encouraging him to apply for the games.

"Invictus has been my driving force because I've been struggling with my mental health," – James

James credits his family for their unwavering support throughout his ordeal. He reflected on his long journey of healing and expressed gratitude for the support he received from his family, including his brother, aunt, and late grandmother.

"It's been a long road to recovery but I've had my family supporting me, my brother and my aunt, and my grandma who has passed away now," – James

The Royal British Legion also played a significant part in supporting James on his path to competing in the Invictus Games.

Prince Harry recognized the unique significance of this year's games for James and Hannah, highlighting the healing power of the Invictus community.

"At Invictus, we provide a space for healing, outstanding athleticism, and in James and his new fiancée’s case, even if you don’t leave with a medal, you could leave with a ring!" – Prince Harry

Hannah’s reaction to the proposal was one of surprise and joy, encapsulated in her playful protest.

"Why are you doing this to me in front of all these people?" – Hannah
