A local school recently concluded a highly successful fundraising event, surpassing their initial target to support Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research. Held as part of the school's Wellbeing Week from February 3rd to 7th, the initiative encouraged pupils to enhance both their physical and mental health while contributing to a worthy cause. The school set up three static bikes on-site, where pupils and staff collectively cycled an impressive 350 miles (563 km) over the week, averaging about 70 miles (112 km) per day.
The event aimed to raise funds for the 4Ed Cycling Challenge, a campaign inspired by Gloucester Rugby player Ed Slater, who announced his diagnosis with MND in 2022. This debilitating disease affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, with more than half of those diagnosed succumbing within two years. The school's efforts were not only a testament to their community spirit but also an opportunity to contribute significantly to advancing MND research.
Mr. Morton described the event as a "massive success," noting the enthusiasm and dedication of everyone involved. Initially, the school set a fundraising target of £5,000. However, with support from Gloucester Rugby coach George Skivington and captain Lewis Ludlow, who visited during the challenge, they managed to exceed expectations. Mr. Morton expressed his pride in the school community, stating:
"They smashed their target on the bikes and managed to reach £6,042." – Mr Morton
The pupils were particularly thrilled by the visit from Skivington and Ludlow, adding an inspiring element to the challenge. Mr. Morton captured their excitement, noting:
"The pupils were absolutely delighted to see them," – Mr Morton
The campaign initially ran across three days in the summer of 2022 and has since gained momentum with continued efforts such as this one. The funds raised will support ongoing research into MND, providing hope for those affected by the disease.
