Plymouth’s Fit and Fed Programme Continues to Benefit Families with Free Meals and Activities

Children in Plymouth will once again enjoy a series of fun-filled activities alongside free meals during school holidays, thanks to the continuation of the Fit and Fed programme. The Department for Education's Holiday Activities and Food programme is funding this initiative, which is orchestrated by Plymouth City Council in collaboration with Plymouth Active Leisure. Set to run during the Easter, summer, and Christmas breaks, the programme offers significant support to local families.

In 2024, the Fit and Fed programme successfully distributed 2,750 free lunches and provided over 30,000 children aged between 5 and 16 years with the chance to participate in various activities. These included sports such as football and water sports, as well as dance sessions. Additionally, 1,000 teenagers had the opportunity to engage in exciting activities like trampolining and karting.

Plymouth councillor Sue Dann expressed her gratitude for the government funding that has allowed the programme to thrive. She emphasized the importance of the initiative in supporting families during school holidays.

"Fit and Fed is an incredibly important programme and we're delighted to have received confirmation that the funding will continue because it offers vital support to families throughout the school holidays," said Sue Dann.

The Fit and Fed programme aims not only to provide healthy meals but also to promote physical activity among children and young people. By participating in these activities, children are able to meet new friends and create lasting memories, contributing positively to their overall development.

"Not only do children and young people receive a healthy lunch, they're also given the opportunity to get physically active, meet new friends and make special memories," Sue Dann added.

Louise Kelley MBE highlighted the real difference made by the funding to families across the city. The programme has proven invaluable in ensuring that children remain engaged and well-nourished during school breaks.
