The National Football League (NFL) has partnered with Tahj Williams, a revered figure among the Golden Eagles Mardi Gras Indians, to create a special logo and theme art for Super Bowl LIX. This marks the first time an artist has collaborated with the NFL to develop such significant artwork for the Super Bowl. Williams' vibrant design will feature prominently on digital game tickets, this year's official program cover, and at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans hotel, all set against the backdrop of the upcoming face-off between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9.
Williams' theme art is a vivid celebration of Black Masking Indian culture, featuring bright pinks, rich reds, eye-catching chartreuses, and verdant greens. The artwork serves as a homage to both Black Masking Indian culture and the broader cultural tapestry of New Orleans. The Mardi Gras Indians, also known as Black Masking Indians, boast a rich tradition of art and pageantry that dates back to the 1800s. This culture arose from a unique blend of traditions shared between African slaves and local Native American groups in the 19th century.
Tahj Williams has dedicated years to mastering the craft of beadwork, spending over 40 hours weekly perfecting her Black Masking Indian suit. Her involvement in this vibrant culture began in childhood, as she grew up attending second lines every Sunday. Williams aims to evoke the feelings she experienced during her formative years through her art.
"Since [I was] a kid, this is all I've ever known. We grow up going to second lines every Sunday and can't wait, and you're sleeping next to whatever outfit you plan on wearing for that particular second line, waking up to go see the Big Chief that comes out of your neighborhood every year, and I just wanted everyone to get those feelings that I used to get as a child looking at New Orleans culture," – Tahj Williams
Williams' work for Super Bowl LIX is not only an artistic endeavor but also an effort to preserve and promote the stories of her ancestors and community. She hopes her art will inspire a new generation to appreciate and continue these rich cultural traditions.
"This is definitely a moment that is going to live with me forever," – Tahj Williams
Marissa Solis, an NFL representative, praised Williams' contribution to Super Bowl LIX.
"Queen Tahj's deep connection to her community and extraordinary talent made her the perfect artist for this project," – Marissa Solis
"Her work authentically honors the cultural roots of New Orleans while celebrating the city's vibrant spirit, and we're excited to spotlight it on the Super Bowl stage and honor the communities that make New Orleans so special," – Marissa Solis
