Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have made an exciting announcement regarding the upcoming Invictus Games. The 2025 edition of this inspirational event will take place in Whistler and Vancouver, Canada, from February 8 to 16, marking the first time winter sports will be included. The Invictus Games, launched by Prince Harry in 2014, is a multi-sport event for wounded, injured, and sick military service personnel. The occasion will also feature a performance by pop star Katy Perry at the opening ceremony.
Prince Harry's military service in Afghanistan significantly influenced his decision to create the Invictus Games. His experience with the British military, particularly a poignant moment in 2008 involving the coffin of Danish soldier Morten Krogh Jensen, left a lasting impact.
"As I was waiting to board the plane, the coffin of a Danish soldier was loaded on by his friends," – Harry
These experiences shaped Harry's understanding of service and sacrifice, ultimately leading to the inception of the Games.
The inaugural Invictus Games took place in London in 2014, setting the stage for the international event held every two years. In 2025, the Games will expand to include winter sports for the first time, further broadening its scope and inclusivity.
"Once on the flight, I was confronted with three British soldiers, all in induced comas, with missing limbs, and wrapped in plastic. The way I viewed service and sacrifice changed forever." – Harry
This revelation during his military service was a pivotal moment for Prince Harry, fueling his determination to honor and support injured service members through sport.
The 2025 Invictus Games will also see notable attendees such as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, who will join Prince Harry during the event. Additionally, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark are expected to arrive on February 15 to show their support.
Looking ahead, the Invictus Games will return to Birmingham, UK, in 2027, continuing its tradition of showcasing courage and resilience on an international platform.
