A wave of violence swept through central Ukraine as recent Russian strikes resulted in the tragic loss of life and widespread destruction. On February 1, a Russian missile struck a residential building in Poltava, killing at least 14 individuals, including two children. Among the deceased was the Yavorsky family—Olena Yavorska, a former biology teacher, her husband Dmytro, and their nine-year-old daughter Sofia. This brutal attack has drawn condemnation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who labeled it "another terrorist crime."
In the aftermath of the strike, emergency services reported that at least 84 additional people were rescued from the wreckage. Four victims are currently in serious condition, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian crisis stemming from the conflict. Approximately 200 people are receiving support from psychologists and emergency responders dispatched by Ukraine's national police department.
The strike on Poltava was part of a broader assault by Russian forces, which also involved drone attacks across various regions. Ukraine's air defenses managed to intercept 40 out of the 55 drones launched during the night, particularly over major cities such as Kyiv. The Kharkiv and Sumy regions were also significantly impacted by these aerial assaults. In a separate incident, tensions escalated further when the Russian military accused Ukraine of attacking a boarding school in Russia's Kursk region. They claimed that Ukraine employed this strike as a diversion to shift global attention away from its own alleged atrocities. According to statements from the Russian military, the guided aerial bomb dropped on the Sudzha school resulted in at least four fatalities.
Ukrainian air force spokespersons refuted these claims, emphasizing their focus on defending their territory against ongoing aggression. Volodymyr Popereshniuk, a colleague of the deceased Olena Yavorska, expressed deep sorrow following the tragedy: "Russia killed our colleague and her family."
