Three employees at the Halifax Infirmary hospital sustained injuries after a patient wielding a weapon attacked them in the emergency department. The incident unfolded on a weekday, prompting a swift response from both hospital staff and law enforcement. As a result, the emergency department restricted its services to life-threatening cases for several hours, ensuring safety while addressing the immediate crisis.
Halifax Regional Police received a weapons complaint call and swiftly arrived at the scene around 1 p.m. Two of the injured employees suffered stab wounds inflicted by the patient. Health Minister Michelle Thompson confirmed that authorities had contained the threat, allowing the hospital to gradually resume normal operations by 6 p.m.

The incident has left many shaken, particularly within the Nova Scotia Health community. Karen Oldfield, CEO of Nova Scotia Health, acknowledged the emotional impact on staff. Among those hurt were two union members, one requiring in-patient care due to serious injuries, while the other experienced less severe harm. Neither of these individuals were nurses; one is part of the support services team, while the other belongs to the health team. A third injured person was not affiliated with the union.
