Bao Li and Qing Bao, two giant pandas from China, have made a remarkable debut at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C. Having arrived on October 15, 2024, these three-year-old pandas are set to captivate visitors with their charm and playfulness. Their introduction to the public marks the culmination of careful preparation and quarantine measures, allowing them to finally meet their eager audience.
The pandas' arrival is not only significant for zoo visitors but also for panda enthusiasts worldwide. The National Zoo has launched a giant panda cam featuring 40 cameras, streaming live from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET. This innovative platform enables viewers to observe Bao Li and Qing Bao's daily activities, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of these fascinating creatures.
Visitors can enjoy viewing the pandas for free at the National Zoo, making it the only zoo in the United States to offer such an opportunity. National Zoo members had an exclusive preview from January 10 to January 19, ahead of the public debut, allowing them a sneak peek at the playful pandas.
In celebration of the pandas' arrival, the National Zoo will host a series of public events and programs from January 25 to February 9. Highlights include a Lunar New Year event, promising a cultural extravaganza for visitors. Additionally, some hotels in Washington, D.C., are offering special panda-themed packages, complete with amenities like stuffed toy pandas, roundtrip zoo transportation, and panda-themed beverages.
Zookeeper Mariel Lally and the dedicated National Zoo team are entrusted with the care of Bao Li and Qing Bao. Lally praises the pandas as "very active," "super cute," and "a lot of fun to watch," reflecting their engaging personalities and playful antics. Under the oversight of Brandie Smith, the John and Adrienne Mars Director of the National Zoo, both the pandas' care and the celebratory events are meticulously planned to ensure a memorable experience for all attendees.
