Community Effort Transforms School Playground into “Amazing” Play Area

Crockerne Primary School celebrated the opening of its new play area on January 20, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Friends of Crockerne, a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) comprised of seven industrious working mothers. The PTA spent two years tirelessly working toward revitalizing the school's concrete play area, which had long suffered from drainage issues that left it frequently flooded. Their perseverance has resulted in a vibrant space that pupils now describe as "amazing," "fun," and "better" than before.

Freya, a 10-year-old student, expressed her excitement about the new facilities, describing them as "a park that's been put in our school." Her sentiments were echoed by her peers, Bella and Reggie, aged seven and eight respectively, who both praised the play area's equipment for being more enjoyable and engaging than its predecessor. Bella appreciated the efforts of the helpers and carers, declaring, "It's really good because all our helpers and carers have made it so brilliant and enjoyable. Thank you!"

The initiative is seen as particularly significant in Pill, the town where Crockerne Primary School is located. Pill ranks second from bottom in terms of child poverty among 36 towns and villages in North Somerset. Despite being "hugely" let down by education cuts, as noted by Charlotte Kaszubski, Chair of Friends of Crockerne, the PTA has managed to cover a wide demographic of children through their efforts.

Rocco, another young pupil aged seven, expressed his gratitude towards the PTA's initiative by stating, "I want everyone to say thank you because they put lots of money into making this." The new play area not only serves as a recreational space but also encourages physical activity among children. Headteacher Emma Bray highlighted the importance of such facilities, emphasizing that the equipment will help children remain fit and active.

The Friends of Crockerne's dedicated efforts showcase how community involvement can make a substantial difference in educational environments. Kaszubski credited the success to the relentless commitment of the seven working mums within the PTA, who have worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality for the children.
