Sam Heughan Embraces Complexity in New Role for “The Couple Next Door”

Sam Heughan, renowned for his role as Jamie Fraser in the acclaimed series "Outlander," takes on a markedly different character in the new Starz series "The Couple Next Door." Premiering on January 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, the show introduces Heughan as Danny, a contemporary police officer navigating an unconventional life with his wife, Becka, portrayed by Jessica De Gouw. The narrative delves into the intricacies of non-traditional relationships, exploring themes of sex, intimacy, and body autonomy, a significant departure from Heughan's previous work.

Set against the backdrop of a suburban neighborhood that starkly contrasts with the values held by Danny and Becka, the series brings to life a host of complex characters. Heughan expressed the challenges of embodying Danny, emphasizing the importance of specificity and collaboration with De Gouw to authentically portray their on-screen romance.

"We had to work out what that relationship is and to try and do justice and service to anyone that does have that kind of relationship," remarked Sam Heughan.

The show’s script, described by Heughan as possessing a "slightly strange, psychosexual, thriller feeling of malaise," presented both him and De Gouw with the task of capturing its unique tone. The ensemble cast includes Eleanor Tomlinson and Alfred Enoch, who enrich the series with their performances. Enoch describes the show’s atmosphere as "toxic," adding an intriguing layer to the drama.

"But there is something delicious about it," Alfred Enoch added, reflecting on the show's compelling nature.

A pivotal aspect of "The Couple Next Door" is its exploration of the queer community and polyamory. De Gouw shared her personal connection to these themes, drawing from her experiences with friends who practice polyamory. Her character Becka is depicted not only as part of an open relationship but also as someone empowered by it.

"I felt a responsibility, particularly from Becka's perspective," stated Jessica De Gouw.

She further explained, "that we're telling a story of someone who chooses this life, who is empowered by this life and who has thrived in this life. We meet [Becka and Danny] at a point of crisis, but it's a different lifestyle that absolutely works and is valid."

The series creator aimed to empower female characters by having them take charge in pitching ideas to their male counterparts. Eleanor Tomlinson emphasized this dynamic, highlighting the importance of female agency within the storyline.

"Jessica and I really wanted to give the women some agency so that they pitched it to the boys," noted Eleanor Tomlinson.

Danny's character is layered with secrecy, as he conceals nefarious dealings and financial issues from Becka. These elements introduce tension and drama, underscoring the unconventional lifestyle that extends beyond their open relationship to include secrets and lies.

Heughan himself welcomed the shift from his previous roles, expressing excitement about portraying a character drastically different from Jamie Fraser.

"Because it's ultimately harder to be that open and that in love with your partner that you will test your comfort levels. It is, ultimately, the romance of the piece," Heughan commented on the nuances of his character's relationship.
