Chilean President Boric Makes Historic Visit to the South Pole

Chilean President Gabriel Boric embarked on a historic two-day journey to the South Pole, marking a significant milestone as he became the first Latin American leader to set foot on this remote part of the world. The expedition, named Operation Pole Star III, saw President Boric accompanied by scientists, armed forces commanders, and government ministers. This landmark visit underscores Chile's ongoing commitment to scientific exploration and peaceful use of Antarctica.

The journey began in Santiago, Chile's bustling capital, and continued to Punta Arenas, a city in the southernmost region of the country. From there, the delegation made several strategic stops before finally reaching the US-run Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. This visit exemplifies Chile's historical presence in Antarctica's northern sector and its ambitions to extend research efforts into the western part of the continent.

Chile is one of seven nations with territorial claims in Antarctica, and its involvement is guided by the Antarctic Treaty, which allows only peaceful and scientific activities on the continent. During his visit, President Boric aimed to reinforce environmental monitoring of pollutants across Antarctica.

"Good morning from Chilean Antarctica, where everything begins." – Gabriel Boric

The president's journey was not just a political statement but also a testament to Chile's dedication to maintaining Antarctica as a hub for scientific research and international cooperation. While standing in the snow at the South Pole, President Boric shared a video on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his pride and sense of honor at this achievement.

"This is a milestone for us. It is the first time a Chilean and Latin American President has visited the South Pole." – Gabriel Boric

The trip also highlighted the symbolic importance of the 12 flags flying at the South Pole, representing the countries that signed the original Antarctic Treaty. Among them was the Chilean flag, a sight that filled President Boric with national pride.

"From here everything is north: there are only 12 flags flying. One of them is the Chilean flag and that is a source of pride." – Gabriel Boric

"the commitment we have for (Antarctica) to be and continue to be a continent of science and peace" – Gabriel Boric
