The city of Pacific Palisades is engulfed in flames as wildfires rage across Southern California, prompting widespread devastation and mandatory evacuations. Jamie Lee Curtis, the acclaimed actress and American Red Cross ambassador, expressed her heartbreak over the wildfires during an emotional appearance on "The Tonight Show." The Pacific Palisades fire has rapidly spread to over 15,000 acres since it ignited on Tuesday morning, destroying more than 300 structures and threatening an additional 13,306. Currently, the fire remains 0 percent contained.
Curtis, who flew to New York City just before the fires started, received distressing updates while in transit. She described the emotional turmoil of being away from her home and loved ones during this crisis. “Flying to New York and hearing the beginnings of the stories of the fire was very challenging to be far away from my home and family and friends and feeling very powerless,” she shared with viewers.
In her heartfelt message, Curtis emphasized the immense impact of the wildfires, labeling the situation a "catastrophe" for Southern California. She highlighted the urgency of support for those affected by the fires, urging viewers to take action within their communities. “Do anything you can, anything in your community to help people,” she said. “Whether you need it or not now, you will need it. Give blood, donate, whatever you can do. Animal shelters.”
As an ambassador for the American Red Cross, Curtis has taken her philanthropic efforts a step further by pledging $1 million to support wildfire relief efforts. She is actively communicating with state officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom, Mayor Karen Bass, and Congressman Adam Schiff, to ensure that funds are directed towards areas that need assistance the most. “I’m in communication with Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass and Senator Schiff as to where those funds need to be directed for the most impact,” she noted.
The ongoing wildfires have led to significant disruptions across the region, including road closures and mandatory evacuations for residents in affected areas. Despite the chaos surrounding her community, Curtis has found solace in knowing that her own home remains safe. She resides with her husband, Christopher Guest, in a house that has so far escaped damage from the flames.
Curtis plans to return to California on Thursday to be with her family and friends as they navigate this difficult time. She conveyed her gratitude for the support she has received from those on the East Coast and expressed her determination to aid in recovery efforts upon her return. “I leave New York City with the hopes and prayers and good thoughts from all in the East Coast as I return home to the best coast and my beloved City of Angels to help start to repair and rebuild,” she stated.
The Pacific Palisades fire is one among several wildfires burning in Southern California, including the Eaton, Hurst, Lidia, and Sunset fires. As first responders work tirelessly to contain these blazes, the community faces an uncertain future.
